Daedalus Structural Engineering
Sobrato Center for Humanities and the Arts

This 49,700 sf Theater and Classroom building was added to Bellarmine’s campus to include a full-fly theater seating up to 440 patrons with thrust stage/orchestra lift, trap, and vomitoriums leading to band and individual music practice rooms below grade. Students enthusiastically learn about the full theater experience from performance to the behind-the-scenes jobs including the audio/visual booth, set shop, and black box theater. The Lobby connects the cantilevered theater lobby with the 3-story classroom wing housing a ceramics studio with kiln and raku pit, digital technology lab and green rooms in addition to instructional classrooms.

Completed by Mae Kawamoto with AKH Structural Engineers

Innovations & Features

The main theater seating and lobby cover a stepped, 20 ft. cantilevered concrete level over a concrete basement which support the steel frame super-structure.

The unique footprint along with stepped roofs and cantilevered floors dictated unique framing conditions at all levels. With a combination of concrete shear walls, steel braced frames and steel plate shear walls, no two structural load paths were alike. The behavior of the system as a whole was taken into thoughtful consideration.
