Daedalus Structural Engineering
PCH Headquarters

This existing concrete and masonry warehouse building turned office/shop is a breath of fresh air amongst the industrial neighboring structures. The added features include a green roof and roof deck, a shipping container conference room which cantilevers out from the former loading dock, board-formed concrete entry feature wall, an open conference room with clerestory windows on all sides that bring in natural light, and a feature central stair cantilevered between the main level and upper level. The central stair, whose steel plate railings double as the stringers, is inlaid with glass treads and landings which bring light down to the entry level from the new skylight. The retrofit included strengthening of the existing roof joists with double channel beams hung from perimeter beams and added double channel columns to reduce the span of the existing tapered glulam beams. Roof ties were added at the tops of the heavy walls along with new, interior shear walls, collectors and perimeter footings. Along the open bay side, a new moment frame was fit into place around one bay opening. PCH utilizes the site as a shop and their office headquarters and turned a bare-bones building into a state of the art, modern office and shop while expressing the original structure’s industrial past.
