Daedalus Structural Engineering
Britannia East Grand

The first of 11 buildings on this self-contained, 27-acre life sciences research and development campus leased by Genentec; building 5/6 is a four-story steel framed structure designed with a special concentric braced frame lateral system.

Project completed by Doug Robertson as Director of Structural Engineering with DES Architects & Engineers.

Innovations & Features

Developed alternative foundation options for this challenging bay mud and debris filled site. Ultimately used drilled piers with steel pipe casing, which served both as temporary casing as well as final reinforcing in lieu of a reinforcing cage. The result of which was a simplified foundation installation that both expedited and reduced the cost of construction.

The buildings include 40-foot bay column spacing to facilitate flexible laboratory space planning.

Optimized the steel frame design by performing a costs study to evaluate the relative steel tonnage and thus the cost for various column bay sizes.
